Salt-laden air in Gyeongsang coastal facilities corrodes fan bearings faster than inland sites. Here is what we measure and how to schedule replacements.

What We See in the Field
Coastal air carries salt particles that settle on fan blades and bearing housings. Within six weeks of installation, we often find a fine white crust on the leading edges of intake fans at Masan and Gimhae sites. Inland facilities in Jinju and Changwon show the same dust accumulation but without the crystalline deposit.
The bearing failure mode differs too. Inland fans typically develop a grinding noise before seizing. Coastal fans often fail suddenly — the bearing corrodes internally until the shaft binds without audible warning.
Measurement Approach
During audits we log:
- Fan RPM deviation from factory spec (measured with a contact tachometer)
- Bearing temperature via thermal camera at the hub
- Visible corrosion on the blade root and motor housing
A fan running 8% below rated RPM with hub temperatures above 52°C at 25°C ambient is flagged for replacement within the next maintenance window, not the one after.
Scheduling Implications
For coastal operators, we recommend fan inspection every six weeks instead of the manufacturer-suggested quarterly interval. Group replacements by rack row so one technician visit covers all flagged units in a single two-hour window.
If your facility has intake filtration, check the filter mesh weekly. Salt crystals clog mesh faster than dust alone, reducing airflow and accelerating hashboard temperatures.
Practical Steps
- Install hygrometer sensors at rack inlet height — not just at room level.
- Log monthly average humidity alongside fan failure dates.
- Budget one extra fan per ten units per quarter for coastal sites.
- Schedule replacements during your lowest electricity-rate block.
The arithmetic is simple: a ₩45,000 fan replaced on schedule during off-peak hours costs less than an emergency swap during afternoon peak rates plus the hashrate lost while adjacent units thermally throttle.
